1. Substitute plain yogurt or pureed low-fat cottage cheese for half or more of the sour cream in a recipe.
2. If a recipe calls for cheese, choose Swiss cheese for the lowest sodium.
3. Add a little oatmeal to pancakes, muffins or quick breads. You may also need to add a little extra liquid.
4. Add Vegetables. Add shredded vegetable like carrots, zucchini or pumpkin to quick breads, muffins or cakes.

Franklin Victorian Bed and Breakfast Sparta, Wisconsin helps Clean the World

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Franklin Victorian Bed and Breakfast helps Clean the World. Guest room soaps and bottled amenities (shampoos, conditioners, lotions and gels) will be recycled for worldwide distribution to stop the spread of preventable diseases

Sparta, Wisconsin and ORLANDO, Fla. – March 23, 2011 – Franklin Victorian Bed and Breakfast has partnered with Orlando, Fla.-based non-profit organization Clean the World (http://www.cleantheworld.org/) to collect and recycle hotel soaps, shampoos, conditioners, lotions and gels to help fight the global spread of preventable diseases. The soaps collected at Franklin Victorian Bed and Breakfast will be shipped to Clean the World for recycling and distribution around the world.

Clean the World is the largest global recycler of hotel amenities, and in just two years of operation has distributed more than 8 million bars of soap to children and families in the United States, Haiti and more than 40 countries worldwide.

Each day 9,000 children around the world die from diseases such as acute respiratory illness and diarrheal diseases that can be prevented by washing with bar soap. Clean the World has a mission to put soap in the hands of people who need it most to improve hygiene and sanitation conditions.

Clean the World has partnered with nearly 770 hotel and bed-and-breakfast properties in North America to provide soaps and bottled amenities to people in need. While doing so, the organization has also fulfilled a valuable environmental mission by diverting an estimated 550 tons of hotel waste from polluting landfills in the United States and Canada.

“We always welcome the addition of bed and breakfasts to our Clean the World hospitality partnership program,” says Shawn Seipler, executive director and co-founder at Clean the World. “As a certified Travel Green Wisconsin destination, The Franklin Victorian B&B has a proud history of putting environmental concern into action. Guests can be confident that the soaps and shampoos they leave behind will be recycled and put to good use. They’re literally turning trash into treasure for people in need.”

Travel Green Wisconsin Bed and Breakfast in a Chevy VOLT

Traveling Green to Wisconsin Bed and Breakfast is really cool when you just picked up a Chevy VOLT like our guest Warren K. from Seattle, WA did on March 15th. Warren has been on a waiting list for 4 years for a Chevy VOLT and he finally got one. He flew from Seattle to Detroit, MI and now is driving back home to Washington.

He is very happy and loves the Chevy VOLT and told us all about it and even let me sit in, it was great to smell the new car smell and what a awesome car. In Detroit he got to have a personal tour of the battery plant too! This car is Very high tech, and very cool looking. He was happy when he figured out the radio for noise on his trip. He is stopping at Chevy dealers on his way back and showing it to them and driving about 10 hours a day and supporting the bed and breakfast along his way home.  He loved his stay with us and Sparta and knew about the Elroy-Sparta Bike trail. He enjoyed meeting Tony Angelini for dinner at Angelini’s Pizzeria & Ristorante just down the street from us.
We wish him good luck and a safe trip home. We were very happy to meet Warren and to see the New Chevy VOLT.  (Now I want one, better put my name on the waiting list)….

Eco-Freindly Gardening Plants

Wisconsin Drought-tolerant container plants

Spring is coming to Wisconsin soon and time to start planning your container plants for your decks and porches. Wisconsin Drought-tolerant container plants require little fuss and are perfect picks for your outside projects.

Use the recycling materials you have collected for being “Green” this past year and create new projects!
I plan to use some old shutters and create a new home for drought-resistant plants and they don’t need a lot of fussing over. Here are some plants to use for yourself to try.

  • Ice Plant
  • Salvia “Wild Watermelon”
  • Stonecrop Sedum. ”Limelight” – attracts butterflies
  • October Daphne Sedum sieboldii -  attracts butterflies
  • Stonecrop Sedum “Angelina” – attracts butterflies
  • Purple Sheep’s Burr (turns ruby red in sun)

Here are some other recommendations:

  • Sempervivum (Latin for “always living) aka Hens and Chicks
  • Sedums Dragon’s Blood Sedum
  • Sedum reflexus
