Holiday Events in Sparta

Sparta, Wisconsin is a fantastic place to visit anytime of the year, but it is especially wonderful in the winter. The town’s quaint Midwestern charm becomes even quainter during the holiday season, when it transforms into a snow covered wonderland filled with friendly locals, colorful decorations, and a festive holiday spirit. Many Spartans spend the winter skiing, snow tubing, or hitting our famous snowmobile trails. Sparta and La Crosse are also home to many amazing and one-of-a-kind holiday events and festivals. Here are some of the events we keep on our calendars every year. We hope to see you there!

Sparta Holiday Lights

November 30th-January 1st

During the holiday season, Evans-Bosshard Park becomes the heart of all things festive in Sparta for the Sparta Holiday Lights celebration. The park’s 6 acres will be covered with beautiful and sparkling lights, turning the park into a truly awe-inspiring Christmas spectacle. When you aren’t admiring the holiday lights, you can visit Santa, sit around the bonfire, sip hot chocolate, and eat yummy treats like cookies and popcorn, all for free. Bring nonperishable food items to donate to the local food pantry if you really want to get into the holiday spirit.

Sparta’s Annual Holiday Parade and Holiday Festival

November 23rd-December 8th

Sparta’s Annual Holiday Parade is the perfect way to kick off the season. The parade follows Walter Street to Evans Bosshard Park for the annual community lighting ceremony, where over half a million Christmas lights will turn on all at once. Join carolers around the bonfire and sip on free hot chocolate for a truly jolly evening.

November 24th-25th, December 1st-2nd, December 8th-9th

Kriskindlemarkt brings the classic Germany holiday market to Sparta. Starting Thanksgiving weekend, venture to Mueller Square to load up on holiday gifts and knickknacks while enjoying traditional German food and spirits, like pretzels, bratwursts, hearty soups, and hot mulled wine. Kriskindlemarkt is the best way to find one-of-a-kind presents and holiday decorations made by local artisans. There will also be performances by the Silent Monks singing the Hallelujah Chorus, horse drawn carriage rides, and the annual Santa Scamper race down Walter Street.

Holiday Train Comes to La Crosse

December 8th

Come to La Crosse to experience Wisconsin’s very own Polar Express. Every year, the local train is decked out in festive holiday lights before it leaves the La Crosse Amtrak station. There will also be musical performances, cookies and hot chocolate, and special appearances by Mr. and Mrs. Claus. Donate food to the Hunger Task Force of La Crosse to help struggling families during this Christmas season.

The holiday fun in Sparta doesn’t stop there. You can also enjoy open hockey at Sparta Ice Rink, visit Santa at the Local History Room, and explore a re-creation of the City of Bethlehem at the Barney Center. At the Franklin Victorian Bed & Breakfast, we love to celebrate Christmas. We hope you visit the halls of your historic B&B this holiday season!
