The holiday season in Sparta is jam-packed with countless fun and festive events and activity for people of all ages to enjoy. From the beautiful spectacle of the Sparta Holiday Lights in Evans-Bosshard Park to the annual holiday parade down Walter Street, it is easy to get into the Christmas spirit in Sparta. However, out of all the incredible events taking place this holiday season, our favorite is by far the Kriskindlemarkt.
Kriskindlemarkt is a traditional, European-style holiday market that takes place on Fridays, 4-8 pm, and Saturdays, 10 am-8 pm, from November 23rd to December 8th. The history of the European holiday market dates all the back to the Late Middle Ages, and Sparta is happy to keep the tradition going. For three weeks, Mueller Square transforms into an authentic German market filled with craft & food vendors, live music, rides & games, and of course, plenty of delicious food. Kriskindlemarkt is the perfect way to jumpstart your holiday shopping season and stock up on gifts and decorations, such as keepsake mugs, ornaments, hats, scarves, gloves, baskets, artisan soaps, and a wide variety of other unique, locally made items. It is easy to spend hours browsing their booths and stalls in pursuit of the perfect gift for the loved ones in your life. Another huge draw of Kriskindlemarkt is their incredible food and snacks. Come with an empty stomach, because while you’re here, you will want to gorge on mouthwatering baked goods, cinnamon glazed nuts, and lots of cider and hot cocoa. Kriskindlemarkt is also a great place to go to try some tasty and authentic German food and spirits.
But that’s not all. Every day of the Kriskindlemarkt is filled with something fun and unique. The Sparta Area Theater and Arts Guild sings beautiful Christmas carols at 7 pm each Friday and 6 pm each Saturday. They will also perform “The Silent Monks Sing the Hallelujah Chorus.” In addition, there will be romantic horse drawn carriage rides between Mueller Square and the lovely holiday lights at Evan-Bosshards Park as well as the annual Santa Scamper race down Walter Street and performances by the Sparta High School Vocal Jazz Ensemble. And don’t forget to be there December 8th for a very special breakfast with Santa Claus.
Kriskindlemarkt is the crown jewel of the Sparta holiday season. We highly suggest you pay a visit to Mueller Square in the coming weeks to stock up on one-of-a-kind food and gifts, participate in their many fun events, and experience the wonders of a traditional European Christmas market. We hope to see you there. Happy holidays!
